Reality Check

September 4, 2011

I was walking to my truck this morning, thinking of a clever way to start this entry … something like, “Even though this is rough right now, at least I’ll be in shape for when the zombie apocalypse happens.” Right about then is when a bird in the driveway across the street made the most un-bird noise I’ve ever heard and scared the shit out of me. I had to laugh at myself. Who am I kidding? I’m getting bitten regardless of the shape I’m in. “Alright zombies, come and get it! Wait … what was that? Phew, it was just a bird. AAAAHHHH WTF???!! SOMETHING’S EATING ME!”

Anyway, running has kicked my ass all week. Week One was a bitch, but this week has seemed to rival it. After the first half of this morning’s run, I began think about next week and started to become concerned. “Should I repeat this week? Should I start over?” Finally I just stopped thinking about next week, slowed my paced a lot and pushed through my last five-minute set.

My recovery times have been fine, the problem has been just getting through the sets. And this coming week, the program is going from what some might call “challenging,” to “why in god’s name did I ever think think was a good idea?”

  • Day 1 = 5 minutes/5 minutes/5 minutes, Day 2 = 8 minutes/8 minutes and Day 3 = 20 minutes

My plan is to keep a slow pace and Just Keep Going, but I am concerned about Days 1 & 2. And Day 3 is like that bird across the street. It scares the shit out of me.

One thing I found interesting was that I still had half a bottle of water when I got home. I guess after five weeks of running I’m finally in good enough shape that I don’t feel the urge to drink a gallon of water after a workout, or maybe it wasn’t Las Vegas hot today and the simple act of breathing outside didn’t cause my fat ass to start sweating. I’d lean toward the later, but maybe my body is beginning to adapt.

OK, I’m going to make a sandwich now to help wash down the rest of this bottle of water, and then see what Tivo’s been recording this weekend. And to bring things back to where they started, Dead Island comes out on Tuesday, and I can’t wait.
